Battle Damaged Imperial TIE Fighter
- Return Of The Jedi
- Opening Cockpit holds 1 pilot
- Pop Off Battle Damage Wings
- Laser sound and light
- Extra stickers showing Battle Damage
Force fact:
Two “AA” batteries not included.
Kenner reused the mold to the original Tie Fighter to make this toy hence the 1978 date on the cockpit. Originally this was to be released, like the Battle Damaged X-Wing, in the ESB line but for reasons unknown it was not done until the ROTJ line.
Jabba the Hutt Dungeon I
- Return Of The Jedi
- Working Crane
- Torture hook/Branding iron holds droids upside down
- Set comes with 3 new figures: Nikto, 8D8 and Klaatu Skiff Guard
Force fact:
Kenner reused the mold to the base of the Droid Factory to make this toy. Like previous items that included figures this was released early in the line and was, at the time, a Sears exclusive.
Jabba the Hutt Playset
- Return Of The Jedi
- Platform with working prisoner gates
- Jabba’s Pipe and bowl as well as a slave chain
- Set comes with 2 new figures; Jabba the Hutt and Salacious Crumb
Force fact:
Unlike most Creatures released by Kenner Jabba the Hutt was given his own playset and accessories as well as Salacious Crumb. Very well done set that sold well it had great play value with the dungeon underneath Jabba himself.
Speeder Bike
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Working Action Speed flaps
- Break apart front end
- Holds one pilot figure (sold separately of course)
Force fact:
One of the most popular of the Star Wars Vehicles the Speeder Bike was one of the least expensive, almost belonging to the Mini Rig class.
TIE Interceptor
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Opening Cockpit holds 1 pilot
- Pop Off Battle Damage Wings
- Laser sound and light
Force fact:
Two “AA” batteries not included.
Kenner reused the mold to the original Darth Vader Tie Fighter to make this toy hence the 1978 date on the cockpit. This ship was the newest version of the Tie Fighter with the Darth Vader Tie Fighter being the prototype.
Y-Wing Fighter
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Opening Cockpit holds 1 pilot plus a port for an R2 unit
- Rotating cannon with a removable bomb
- Retractable landing gear and removable engine pods
- Laser sound and light
Force fact:
Two “C” batteries not included.
The Y-Wing was prominent in the movie Return of the Jedi but was in all the original Star Wars movies. Long overdue release of the great Rebel Alliance bomber.
Ewok Village Playset
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Working Elevator and escape chute
- Net Trap and swinging boulder
- Throne and fire pit
Force fact:
This was the “big” set for Christmas 1983 even though the price point of several of the new vehicles were about the same. Pretty cool set that is later reused by Kenner for the Robin Hood line as were other Ewok vehicles and playsets.
AST-5 Armored Sentinel Transport
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Opening Cockpit
- 2 Movable Laser Cannons
- Movable Wings
Force fact:
Like the previous Mini-Rigs they are vehicles “just off screen.” We now refer to these as Expanded Universe toys. Toys which were not in the film but were in the background and were similar to other items of the time. Kenner would release four in total for ROTJ as well as two for the Ewoks.
ISP-6 Imperial Shuttle Pod
- Return Of The Jedi
- Opening Cockpit
- 2 Movable Laser Cannons
- Manually operating Wings and automatic landing gear
Force fact:
Of all the ROTJ Mini Rigs this one is the best in my opinion. It had great play value as an Imperial Shuttle (which was not released until the following year).
C-3PO Collector Case
- Return Of The Jedi
- Collector case that holds 40 Star Wars Figures
- Sticker sheet of the original 65 Figures
- Special Chamber to store accessories
Force fact:
Though Kenner re-released the Darth Vader case for ROTJ it also came out with the C-3PO case that was all chromed and looked really good in package. Like the Vader case these were marketed to mothers who wanted kids to keep their rooms clean and have all their stuff tidied up. No kid wanted this toy that was the same price as any other thing out this year. Really, a Tie Interceptor or Ewok Village, maybe a Y-Wing or three Speeder Bikes…no a C-3PO case is what I would want. Never happened, mothers and grandmothers only bought these cases.
Chewbacca Bandolier Strap
- Return Of The Jedi
- Collector case that holds 10 Star Wars Figures
- Comes with 2 Pouches for accessories and “secret messages” – I have no idea why they included this, desperation maybe
- Can be worn over your shoulder
Force fact:
Well, what can I say. This is the worst of the toys Kenner released. Like they did not have enough carrying cases to begin with they had to make this thing. I have no idea how many sold but I do know from seeing them in the stores that they were on clearance…for years. They were still on the shelves in 1988 and I left them behind and am glad I did even when they were under a $1 each. There were not a few of them left behind but hundreds.
Mini Action Figure Collector Case
- Return Of The Jedi
- Collector case that holds 24 Star Wars Figures
- Sticker sheet of the original 65 Figures
- Flip over the 2 cases and they are an excellent display stand!
Force fact:
I think we have seen these toys before. The fifth and final rendition of the Vinyl Action Figure case was this ROTJ version. Much tougher than any others as it was released in much smaller numbers probably due to the fact Kenner also released the Darth Vader case in ROTJ as well as the new C-3PO case and the Chewbacca Bandolier Strap.
This set has red trays.
Jabba the Hutt Dungeon II
- Return Of The Jedi
- Working Crane
- Torture hook/Branding iron holds droids upside down
- Set comes with 3 new figures: Amanaman, EV-9D9 and Barada
Force fact:
This was the last of the Figure included Playsets done by Kenner. This one included 3 of the 1985 POTF Figures for the Christmas holiday. Often referred to as the POTF Dungeon as opposed to the earlier Jabba Dungeon this set was indeed released in ROTJ and does not have the POTF logo. Many collectors do not realize this was a 1984 release set, many months before the POTF line hit stores the following year.
Kenner reused the mold to the base of the previous Dungeon (just changed the color again) to make this toy. Like previous items that included figures this was released early in the line and was, at the time, a Sears exclusive.
B-Wing Fighter
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Opening Cockpit holds 1 pilot and is gravity controlled
- Rear Engine Pod turns to move Wings into Attack Position
- Retractable landing gear
- Laser sound and light
Force fact:
Two “AA” batteries not included.
The B-Wing was prominent in the movie Return of the Jedi and new to the franchise. Lucas always introduced new Vehicles and environments into his Star Wars films. The B-Wing Fighter was the latest innovation added to the Rebel Alliance’s arsenal.
Rancor Monster
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Push lever on Rancor’s Back to open his jaw
- Has movable legs and wrists
- Spread spring loaded arms snap back in position
Force fact:
The Rancor Monster was largest Creature released by Kenner from the films. Great toy that is quite movie accurate (for the 1980s) and a great addition to the line.
Sy Snootles and the Max Rebo Band
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Set comes with 3 Figures: Sy Snootles, Max Rebo and Droopy McCool
- Includes Piano, 2 Microphones and Saxophone
Force fact:
There was some debate in my mind as to whether to include these three with the figures or with the Vehicles and Playsets. They do come on an oversized blister card/window box and are figures but in the end I decided they are part of the Boxed items given their packaging and accessories.
Regardless there were three more figures to inhabit Jabba’s domain. As seen in the photo on the package these are the correct, unaltered versions of the trio before the abominable changes of the special, butchered, altered and ruined re-re-re releases of the film.
Imperial Shuttle
- Return Of The Jedi
- Opening Cockpit holds 2 pilots
- Adjustable wing laser cannons
- Wings automatically move into flying position at the push of a button
- Ramp lowers so Action Figures can come on board
- Rear landing gear is retractable
- Side panels pop off for inside play
- Laser sound and light
Force fact:
Two “AA” batteries not included.
The “EPIC” piece of the ROTJ toy line, released as the big Christmas item for 1984 and it was a stunner. Great toy with great playability. This is the absolute best of ROTJ and second only to the AT-AT among the Vehicles and Playsets.
Desert Sail Skiff
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Rotating cockpit
- 2 Movable Laser Cannons and adjustable rear sail
- Extendable plank that can be retracted to make figures fall over the side
Force fact:
Much like the ISP-6 the Desert Sail Skiff had great play value and was a good prelude to the larger Tatooine Skiff (which was not released until the following year).
Endor Forest Ranger
- Return Of The Jedi
- Tri-logo
- Gravity controlled cockpit
- Spinning Laser Cannons and retractable landing gear
- Opening cockpit for 1 pilot
Force fact:
An interesting addition to the Mini Rigs line as this vehicle is not like anything in the film and very imaginative.
Ewok Assault Catapult
- Return Of The Jedi
- Load Ewok Assault Catapult by turning the crank
- Pull the string when ready to fire
- Adjust the catapult arm tip to make sure shots higher or lower
Force fact:
Kenner took the Mini-Rigs in a slightly different direction here with these next two by both reducing the price point and making them Ewok centered. Actually really cool toys like all the “Expanded Universe” stuff Kenner did for Star Wars.
Ewok Combat Glider
- Return Of The Jedi
- Put figure into harness under glider
- Attach boulders by placing loop over action lever hook
- Drop rocks or bombs on enemy targets by activating the boulder drop lever
Force fact:
Another really cool Ewok piece straight from Return of the Jedi for the Mini Rigs.
Laser Rifle Case
- Return Of The Jedi
- Collector case that holds 19 Star Wars Figures
- Includes a compartment for accessories and “secret messages” – As before I have no idea why they included this
- Can be used as a rifle and has a see-through scope that doubles as a handle
Force fact:
Yet another figure carrying case. A bit more imagination in this one over the Bandolier Strap at least. I have heard a number of collectors who made interesting uses out of this toy including a Jedi Killing Long Distance Rifle and also, when opened, a Jabba Sail Barge. We really had a fun time with these toys and using our vivid imaginations making use of everything around us. Fun times indeed!
